Notion AI vs ChatGPT: When to use which

Notion AI and ChatGPT seem like they do similar things. Both have AI. Both help you write faster. But they’re actually solving different problems.

Notion AI: The workflow tool

Notion AI lives inside Notion. It’s designed to help you work faster inside the tool you’re already using.

What it’s good for:

Generating content inside your workspace. Writing database entries. Summarizing notes. Brainstorming ideas while you’re already in Notion. The key benefit: no context switching. You stay in Notion.

Real example: You’re in Notion managing a client list. You want to add a new entry. Instead of switching to ChatGPT, you ask Notion AI right there: “Generate a profile template for a marketing agency client.” It generates. You save it.

The cost model: Free with limited credits (usually 20/month), or pay $10/month for more credits. It’s pay-per-use within your subscription.

Limitations: Limited to Notion. Slower than ChatGPT. Less powerful for complex analysis.

ChatGPT: The browser tool

ChatGPT lives in your browser or app. It’s general-purpose AI without context of your specific workflow.

What it’s good for:

Anything requiring deep thinking or complex analysis. Research. Brainstorming from scratch. Writing longer pieces. Image analysis. You’re getting the full power of GPT without it being constrained to one workflow.

Real example: You want to understand the competitive landscape for your business. You paste in details about your market, competitors, and positioning. ChatGPT analyzes and gives you insights. This would be painful in Notion. It’s natural in ChatGPT.

The cost model: Free version is genuinely usable. ChatGPT Plus is $20/month for GPT-4 and more usage.

Advantages: Fast, powerful, accessible from anywhere, handles images and files.

Side-by-side on common tasks

Generating social media post: Both work. ChatGPT is faster. Notion is fine if you’re already in Notion managing that content.

Drafting email: ChatGPT is better for serious emails. Notion is fine for quick drafts.

Analyzing a document you have in Notion: Notion AI wins because it’s already there. ChatGPT requires copying and pasting.

Analyzing a document outside Notion: ChatGPT wins because you don’t have to move it first.

Brainstorming product features: ChatGPT is deeper. Notion is quicker if you’re already in your product requirements doc.

Writing a blog post outline: ChatGPT. More power, better for longer thinking.

My actual recommendation

If you use Notion: Use Notion AI for quick work inside Notion. Use ChatGPT for anything serious or complex. Both are cheap.

If you don’t use Notion: Just use ChatGPT. Start with free. Upgrade to Plus if you’re using it daily for work.

If you hate switching between tools: Use Notion AI for everything inside Notion. Accept that you’ll need ChatGPT for complex work and you’ll need to copy-paste.

The honest truth

Notion AI is convenient. ChatGPT is more powerful. You’ll end up using both if you’re serious about AI in your business. They’re complementary, not competitive.

Both are cheap enough to try. Pick one. Use it for a month. You’ll know if the other one fills a gap.
